This confuses many homeowners, so let me clarify what’s required under Part P of the Building Regulations:

Work requiring Part P certification and building control notification:

- Complete or partial rewiring

- New electrical circuits

- Consumer unit replacements or upgrades

- EV charger installations

- Electrical work in bathrooms

- Outdoor electrical installations (gardens, outbuildings)

For all these jobs, I provide an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and submit notifications to building control on your behalf. You don’t need to do anything—I handle the entire compliance process.

Work requiring a Minor Works Certificate (but not building control notification):

- Adding sockets or lights to existing circuits

- Replacing light fittings

- Most repair work and fault finding

For these jobs, I provide a Minor Works Certificate documenting the work carried out and test results.

All certificates remain valid until alterations are made to those specific installations.

What if previous work wasn’t certified?

If someone has had electrical work done by an unqualified person, I can’t retrospectively certify work I didn’t do and can’t verify was completed to standard. Depending on the situation, the work may need to be tested, modified, or potentially redone to meet regulations. I can assess this during an EICR inspection.
